The landscaping at the Four Seasons Wailea, which adjoins the The Grand Wailea Resort, reflects a palatial theme from the Royal Palms that line the entry drive to the formal gardens, terraces and fountains which cascade from the inner courtyard to the sea below.

Because of the relatively small site outdoor areas were maximized for the enjoyment of guests.  To also attain the greatest number of ocean view rooms, a U-shaped building was designed with a sweeping grand stairway descending to the courtyard, pool and beach below.

Although this configuration by itself was not unusual the landscaping of the roof deck courtyard had to be designed to give little hint of the parking facilities, ballroom and back house below.

The final design for this area features broad panels of lawn and brilliant bands of flowers punctuated by formal cascading fountains and geometric water tunnels.  Because of weight and space considerations trees were kept to a minimum while shallow lawn, ground cover and water areas were maximized.  The overall effect is one of “softscape” rather than the hardscape that characterizes most roof deck developments.
