During the peak of the steam liner, Honolulu was the most important port of the Pacific. As luxury liners steamed into the harbor, residents gathered to greet guests and to enjoy the pageantry known as Boat Day, or Steam Day. At the pinnacle of the festivities, acting as a beacon to visitors and residents alike, was the tallest structure west of the Mississippi, the Aloha Tower. After falling into neglect the State of Hawai`i initiated an effort to revitalize Honolulu's waterfront. Views to the waterfront and public access were returned to urban Honolulu, redefined and highlighted. Aloha Tower would become a marketplace, a center of activity, where ships commerce, restaurants, and people come together.
