Conceived during the development of the Hawai`i Convention Center, the 60-foot wide, terraced promenade provides a leisurely route along the Ala Wai Canal. Special care was taken to preserve the original Banyans, designated as “exceptional” by the County. The upper terrace, a 16-foot wide walkway, is constructed of interlocking pavers which allow air infiltration and water percolation to the tree roots. Pavers were laid in patterns reminiscent of Hawaiian tapa to reinforce the Hawaiian sense of place. Bands of cascading Purple Bougainvillea provide color while Hibiscus hedges provide screening along property lines. Additional Banyans were planted to create a continuous allee on both levels of the promenade.
